Annual Events in Mobile and along the Gulf Coast
America's Junior Miss is a national non-profit organization that provides scholarship opportunities to high school Junior girls. Only young females in their junior year of high school are eligible for the program. This program provides the young ladies with the opportunity and support needed to succeed before, during, and after attending college. Since its existence in 1958, over 500,000 young ladies have participated in competitions spanning the United States. Each state hosts a state program in which the winning representative advances to the national program, America's Junior Miss held in the program's birthplace of Mobile, Alabama.
Growing from an initial attendance of 50,000 people in 1995, BayFest has become known for its array of musical talent suited to a wide variety of tastes. Attendance now averages 150,000 to 200,000 people during the three day weekend each year. Throughout the past eleven years, acts such as B.B. King, 3 Doors Down, Collective Soul, Hootie & The Blowfish, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, Widespread Panic, Keith Urban, Travis Tritt, The Gap Band, STP and Merle Haggard have performed on 9 stages for three days. BayFest has been voted Mobile's "Best Annual Event" in Mobile Bay Monthly magazine six times in its eleven years, surpassing Mardi Gras. It has been named as one of the Southeast Tourism Society's "Top 20 Events" several times since 1995.
Once a year thousands of Mobile-area residents flocked to the Greater Gulf State Fairgrounds for the Hog Wild Festival and BBQ Championship benefiting United Cerebral Palsy. This event features incredible food, live music, activities for kids, cooking demonstrations and much more!
St. Margaret's Catholic Church in the fishing community of Bayou La Batre celebrates the annual Blessing of the Fleet. The event, which opens the shrimp season, has become part religious ceremony, part local heritage celebration and part tourist attraction. It centers on the colorful parade of boats that cruise up the Bayou to receive blessings by the Archbishop who prays for a good harvest and a safe return.
At the Mobile International Festival you can enjoy the adventure of first-hand experience of varied cultures. You can visit the continents of Asia and Africa in the lobby area and Europe and the Americas in the East Exhibit Hall. The Annual National Shrimp Festival is held each year during the second full weekend in October on the beautiful beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama. The Festival is one of the nation?s premier outdoor festivals featuring over 300 vendors that offer fine art, arts and crafts, a retail marketplace and of course, SHRIMP!!
